In addition, Dr. Preter received the Castle Connolly 2019 Exceptional Women in Medicine Award which is featured in the September 30, 2019 edition in New York Magazine.


Dr. Preter was educated in the European medical tradition in France and Germany with electives at Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Preter obtained a European Master's and Ph.D. degree in Psycholinguistics and Special Education. Dr. Preter obtained her psychiatric training in New York City at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Payne Whitney Clinic. Dr. Preter is educated as a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst.

After completing her psychiatric training, Dr. Preter served as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she taught students and residents. Dr. Preter's clinical work focused on community psychiatry and she was in charge of a newly established child and adolescent psychiatric clinic in a rural community. Upon her return to New York City, Dr. Preter commenced her private practice of child, adolescent and adult psychiatry, worked in a community psychiatry clinic and served as child and adolescent psychiatric consultant and clinical supervisor at the CUNY Graduate Center, Program in Clinical Psychology.

Dr. Preter is on faculty at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute where she teaches, supervises, and serves as Director of Children's Clinical Services at the Treatment Center.

Dr. Preter is involved in scholarly work in the area of psychodynamic psychotherapy in youth with anxiety disorders at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Preter is licensed as a physician in New York State and board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. Dr. Preter also holds European Union Medical Licensure.
